Making Great Choices In 2012 - Happy New Year!

Every day, this life which God has given presents us with options.  We can choose between wrong and right; harmful activities or healthy activities; the self-directed way or God’s way.

We can choose to withdraw from life and try to close our eyes to reality or we can choose to engage fully with our eyes opened to the truth and whole-heartedly embrace life.

I pray that 2013 will be a year of great choices and true life—abundant life—for all of us.

Happy New Year!

Love and blessings,

Dan

A Trip To The Flea Market - Video

A Heavy Negotiation At The Flea Market

We went to the giant flea market in Fort Myers today.  Immediately upon entering the gates of the flea market, my father-in-law entered into a tough negotiation with a lady who owns one of the produce stands.  For my father-in-law and the produce lady the negotiation was tough, crucial and even slightly testy, at times.

For me, the essence of the negotiation involved my bewilderment at the fact that they were putting this much effort into a disagreement involving 50 cents.

Fortunately, a nearby vendor offered deep fried Oreos—which I had never tried before—so, I was able to quietly sidle away from the negotiation and direct my attention to truly important matters.

Savoring The Gift of Life

The moments of our lives fly by very quickly.  If you haven’t noticed that already, just wait.  You will.  So it is helpful for us to pay attention and be engaged.  Be fully present to notice and even to savor this gift of life that God has given to us.

Is Jesus Right? I'm Trusting That He Is

Some people are concerned that if they live the way God calls us to live it will ruin their fun and cramp their style. That’s why it’s interesting to consider that Jesus said that actually the best way for us to live our lives is to die to ourselves and live for Him.

“What? That’s crazy!” Some will protest. “That would be confining and boring.”

So, then, the questions are:  Is Jesus right?  Does Jesus really know best?  Does Jesus really know the most fulfilling, most effective, most meaningful way for you and I to live our lives?

I can’t claim that I follow Him perfectly, but I’m trusting that He does know best.

Just Saw Jack Reacher... I Think

We just saw Jack Reacher, the Tom Cruise movie.  It’s a pretty good action film.  The singing and dancing was terrific; the costumes were beautifully done; and wow, who knew that Cruise had such a wonderful singing voice!?!

…Oh wait a minute.  You know what?  …It’s suddenly occurring to me that I may have wandered into Les Miserables by mistake.  Hmm, that would explain why the time frame of the movie resembled France in the early 1800’s—and it would explain why Tom looked so much like Anne Hathaway.

I really need to start paying more attention when the usher points out the correct theater number.

I'm Not Yet One Of The Seniors

I look at least 15 years older than my actual age (which is 54). In Florida—where I’m taking a break—this creates mildly irritating situations for me because the retired seniors think I’m one of them.

Seventy-five to eighty year old women flirt with me. “I’m going to bingo tonight at the V.F.W. Maybe I’ll see you there.”

Senior men chuckle and make references to Tommy Dorsey music while shaking their heads and saying, “Peanuts Hucko played a mean clarinet, if you know what I mean.”

I don’t know what they mean!

Today, while standing in line, a senior said to me: “Are you a snowbird or a full-timer?”

Me: “Neither. I’m not retired I’m just here for vacation.”

Senior: “What? When are you going to retire? You can’t put it off forever, you know.”

Me: “I’m not putting it off, I’m only 54 years old.”

Senior: (Looks me over carefully and with a slight amount of sadness and disbelief.) “That’s too bad.”

I guess it’s probably best if I don’t talk to strangers.

The Christmas Presents Call

If there’s a wrapped present in the house the mystery of “what-could-it-be?” is more than Rachel can withstand.  The present calls, it teases, it beckons Rachel.  She tries to go about her business and think of other things but the present whispers, sparkles and winks.

I can’t hear it.  You wouldn’t be able to hear it either.  But it’s tuned to a frequency that Rachel can hear and it says, “Wouldn’t you love to know…?  Open me and you can find out.”

Ultimately, it’s too much.  She’s only human, after all.  The wrapping paper is torn and the present is revealed.

If only the thrill of the present itself could match the thrill of the anticipation.

The King of Kings Lying In A Manger Says "I Love You!"

Jesus had to humble himself and be a human being in order to serve as a sacrifice for human beings.  In other words, He had to be human so that we could be forgiven; so that we could have eternal life.  The humility of Jesus is another aspect of His love for us.  So, when we think of the King of Kings lying in a manger as a humble baby, remember that is another way of God saying to us, “I love you!”

Negotiating Change With God's Wisdom

The question is not whether there will be some types of changes in our lives—there will be change, count on it.  The question is whether or not we will negotiate the changes with God’s help and wisdom.

End Of The World Chatter

Ironically, all this chatter about the end of the world brings to my mind the idea of eternity which tells us that while the end of our physical life on earth will happen our personal existence will continue forever.  Now, keep in mind that “forever” will tend to continue on for quite a while, so, where we spend eternity is worthy of our thoughtful, careful, prayerful consideration.

Opening Presents Early

Because of our busy schedules over the next few days right up to Christmas Eve and Christmas day, my family enjoyed a lovely dinner tonight and then gathered together and opened our Christmas presents.  It was a warm, caring, special time that included two large dogs loudly chewing on bones.   (You know that loud chewing enhances almost any experience, don’t you?)

You might be saying, “Wait a minute, Dan!  How is it possible that you’ve opened up presents already?  Does Santa come to your house earlier than everyone else’s home?”

The answer is, “Not usually.”

But this year I negotiated a special deal with Santa for an early delivery.  He does this on occasion with certain people; if “you punks will grease the wheels.”  (That’s his phrase and it reveals a side of Santa that people don’t typically see.)

Now, the presents are opened and we’re sitting back and enjoying this wonderful family time together….  Which means that we’re each in separate rooms with electronic devices and I’m typing strange thoughts to post online for my amusement.

And… hopefully… for your amusement, too.

Exclusive Truth Claims

I read a post from a friend recently in which she quoted a person who disagreed with her regarding the Christian faith.  The person who disagreed with my friend stated that one of the reasons he does not like Christians is because they claim to be right.  He went on to say that he is fighting against “the idea that one faith is right and therefore all others are wrong.”

Here is a comment, with a few edits, that I wrote in response to my friend’s post:

I hesitate to comment on this post.  I’m more inclined to simply pray as you have asked us to do.  But your [acquaintance] makes a statement that reveals a misunderstanding that I think is worth pointing out just because it is so common.

He makes the statement that what he is fighting against is “the idea that one faith is right therefore all others are wrong.”  However, by making that statement he is doing the very thing that he claims to be fighting against.  He is suggesting that he is right in his stance and therefore you and all Christians who hold that the truth claims of our faith are correct (based on the teachings of the Bible) are wrong.

One of the intellectual tactics used against Christians is to accuse them of making exclusive truth claims.  That’s a strong charge in our pluralistic culture.  In reality, though, every religion makes exclusive truth claims.  All of the religions of the world make claims which they hold to be true and, yet, their claims contradict claims which are taught by other religions.  When they do that, they are saying, “we’re right because we hold that our position is true.”  If they are correct—if their position is true—then it excludes the contradictory claims of the other religions from being true.

Contradictory claims cannot both be true.  This is a logical reality regarding the nature of truth, whether we like it, or not.

And, moreover, this does not just apply to religions.  Any individual who makes a statement and claims that it is true is presuming to exclude from truth everyone who holds a position that contradicts his claim.  So, again, your [acquaintance] is surely suggesting that he’s correct in the position that he holds or else he wouldn’t have written this note to you.  But his position—if it is correct—excludes your beliefs from being true.  He’s making EXCLUSIVE truth claims.  But according to his rules—the cause that he says he’s fighting for—he’s not supposed to do that.  Right?

Reach Out To Others This Season

This piece was run in today's Southtown Star Newspaper...

Reach out to others this season
During the holiday season, there is typically a lot of talk about spending time with family and other loved ones. Many people get together to share meals, exchange gifts, attend church services and other holiday events.
All of this is, of course, very nice, but for some people, holidays can actually be a painful time, particularly from a relationship standpoint. The emphasis on relationships at this time of year is an unwelcome reminder for some, and their loneliness is magnified.
I don’t write this letter to put a damper on your festivities. I truly hope you’re experiencing joy and happiness, and I’m all in favor of festivities! However, it seems reasonable to encourage all of us to take a moment to think about folks we may know who could be included in our holiday celebrations.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we reached out a hand of friendship, fellowship and love to a neighbor or co-worker or other friend and helped them feel appreciated and to experience a little extra joy? Thinking of others is surely in keeping with the spirit of Christmas.

Christmas Shopping On A Monday

Monday is my day off and I chuckled as I drove to the store to do a little Christmas shopping.  “Ha. Ha. I can get my shopping done on a Monday when everyone else is at work and the stores will be empty!”  I actually patted myself on the back while I was driving.

(By the way, if you pat yourself on the back while you’re driving keep at least one of your hands on the wheel or it’s possible that you’ll take out someone’s mail box.  …At least, that’s what I’ve heard.)

Then I got to the store… and I wasn’t laughing anymore.  Apparently, everyone—and I mean everyone—now has a day off on Monday.

I stopped patting myself on the back and stood in long lines instead.

Moral of the story?  Do your Christmas shopping on a Monday.  But make it a Monday in August.

E-Flash From Dan - School Shootings, Sadness

Dear E-Flash Friends;

My heart breaks with sadness and I have tears in my eyes as I write these words.  Like many of you I’ve been watching coverage of the school shootings that occurred today in Newtown, Connecticut.

I keep shaking my head and saying, “How could he do this to children?”

I’m thinking about families who sent a child off to school this morning and because of the unimaginable wickedness and evil of this deranged person their precious lives have been taken and the lives of these families have been irrevocably altered.  Certainly, there are no adequate words to describe their pain.  I am praying for them and I know you are, too.

“Lord have mercy and somehow bring love, support, strength, peace and hope to these families in the midst of this horrendous tragedy.  We grieve.  We are thankful that you welcome these young ones into your loving arms.”

Love and blessings,

Dan

What I Overheard...

I had to cover my mouth to keep from laughing out loud a few moments ago when I overheard a senior citizen at the table next to mine say this, “____ is a nice person and he has a good heart…
...But I would never trust him at my house.”
(I know, I know, I shouldn’t be listening to his conversation, but he’s sitting 4 feet away from me and I couldn’t avoid hearing him.)

When's The Last Time You Had A Holiday?

“Historically, a holiday was a ‘holy day,’ an intrinsically valuable, special, active change of pace in which, through proactive play and recreation, you refreshed your soul.” – Moreland & Issler.  By that definition of the word, when’s the last time you actually had a holiday?

We Never Know What Others Are Dealing With

After many years of offering counsel and a listening ear to others I have come to realize that there are always things going on in people’s lives that we don’t know about—sometimes there will be painful, stressful, difficult things happening that we don’t know about. I don’t say this to suggest that this gives people permission to behave any way they want, but I do say it to suggest that we be willing to extend patience, mercy and grace.

A Great Point of View

I’ve heard about and read about people who honestly look forward to troubles, problems, challenges and obstacles because they see these aspects of life as opportunities to grow, learn and stretch. They view difficulties as a chance to exercise leadership and come up with creative solutions and responses. I’m trying to learn to trust God and—with a strong sense of His presence—develop this point of view.

What Are You Sowing?

No one, in the history of the world, has ever planted apple seeds and had a banana tree sprout up out of those seeds.  As the Bible tells us, “You will always harvest what you plant.” This is a very helpful truth to keep in mind because we are sowing seeds as we live life, with every action we take and every conversation we have.

There’s something powerful that happens when we present ourselves to the world with total honesty. But when we imagine the reaction of others to who we really are, it can scare us. It’s courageous and important for us to whisper a prayer, take a deep breath, and present ourselves honestly anyhow.

When We Understand God's Love, Fear Diminishes

A long time ago, a friend told me that she feels a low level sense of fear, almost all the time.  It is not God’s intention that we would live this way.  When we acknowledge and fully embrace God’s total and unfailing love for us, we don’t experience fear.  When we understand the truth of God’s love we experience peace, joy, assurance, and the fullness of life!

God Has A Purpose For Every Person

My daughter, Rachel, has a genetic condition that is known as Smith-Magenis Syndrome.  This results in certain challenges both physically and mentally, including diminished intellectual capabilities.

Her condition might lead some people to conclude that Rachel has very little, if any, meaningful contribution to make to our world.  I certainly understand and would not argue with the fact that her challenges limit the kinds of contributions she will be able to make in life.  For example, she will not offer any new and advanced surgical procedures to the world of medicine—but frankly none of the rest of us are likely to do that, either.

However, I would argue that Rachel’s limitations do not mean that she does not contribute to the world.  And, I have found that she has a way of making contributions to the lives of others that “regular” people are not likely to make.

For example, a friend of mine went through a period where he wasn’t at church very often.  One Sunday when he attended a service, Rachel greeted him with genuine joy and excitement, giving him one of her patented Rachel mega-hugs.  We know these greetings from Rachel are genuine because if she is not joyful and excited about seeing someone she, typically, ignores the person.

He has told me several times that that was one of the most meaningful things that he experienced at church.  I believe part of the reason it was so meaningful for him is because he knew that the excitement of seeing him was authentic on her part and because of his appreciation for the unique person that Rachel is.  I would suggest—based on his comments to me—that was a positive contribution to his life that no other person could have made.

I will admit that I have wondered why God made Rachel the way that he did.  But I never question whether she is worthwhile and valuable.  She is a priceless gift of God in my life (while occasionally irritating me, as all children must do), the lives of my family, and the lives of many who know her.

I love her just the way she is.

It’s important for us not to be too presumptuous about making determinations regarding which persons are valuable and which persons are not valuable.  Some people definitely have greater capabilities than others but I do not believe they have greater value in God’s eyes.  And God has a purpose for each one.

Ouch! The Chair Moved

There’s an exercise in which you stand flat-footed and then make a vertical leap onto a chair.  …In the spirit of helping others, I just thought I’d mention that it hurts a lot if you do this and the chair moves.

Pleasing God

It’s a simple truth, but sometimes—in the give and take of life—we lose sight of it.  The truth is this: it is far more important that we do what pleases God than that we do what pleases people.

Saying "Yes" To Life!

Some people think Christianity is all about “No, no, no!”  “You can’t do this” and “you can’t do that.”  But actually Christianity is about saying yes to life.  Real life.  The fullness of life.  Abundant life!  Life in Christ, which is a life of goodness, truth and beauty.  There’s a divine drama that is unfolding.  I want to be in on it.

Is God Enough?

Sometimes instead of being content with an authentic relationship with God, we have an “itch for novelty.”  I understand this “itch for novelty” because I feel this inclination present in me.  The question it forces me to wrestle with is this:  Isn’t God enough?

Problems At The Restaurant

The waiter delivered Rachel’s BLT sandwich and through a process of careful food observation—that we’ve learned from watching cooking competition shows—we noticed that it did not contain the “T.” So, the waiter informed the kitchen and several minutes later a fresh new BLT was served.  Through the same process of careful food observation we noticed that the new BLT did not contain the “T” either.

We looked around for hidden cameras but unfortunately these proceedings were, apparently, not being filmed for a wacky TV show.

It was around this same time that we noticed that rolled up within Nadia’s crepes was a piece of paper—which is handy if you’re going to write something about the crepes but not quite as helpful if you want to actually eat the crepes.

The waiter—who was embarrassed and trying to make everything right—brought out new food and did not charge us for the entrees.

I laughed about the whole episode and was thankful that there was nothing unusual, like paper, in my food!

Although, we’ve been home for several hours, now, and a few moments ago I coughed up a paper airplane.  That’s not normal, is it?

The "Silent Treatment" As A Favor To Others

When I give people “the silent treatment” it’s not viewed as a punishment, it’s viewed as a really nice favor.

Pray And Pursue God's Agenda, Too

The Bible tells us to pray without ceasing.  (1Thess.5:17)  That can’t mean that we sit with our heads bowed, our eyes closed, and our hands folded all the time.  So, it must mean that when we pray we are also actively pursuing God’s agenda in our lives.

Faith That Is Reasonable

Can we convince someone to become a Christian through logical arguments?  It’s probably not likely.  But I’ve found that it can help believers and non-believers to know that there are strong, valid arguments as well as compelling evidence for the Christian faith.  Yes, it is still faith, but it’s not a blind faith that is completely without justifiable reason.

Coming To Know Jesus, Not Religion

If you say, “I’m not a fan of the power plays and politics and some of the antics that I see in organized religion,” you might be interested to know that Jesus wasn’t happy about that stuff either.  Christianity is not really about perpetuating an organized religion, at it’s heart, it’s about coming to genuinely know the living Jesus Christ.

The Truth of God's Love Can Be Hard To Believe

It’s interesting that—in counseling sessions—I never have to convince people that they’ve messed up, made mistakes, caused pain, and committed sins.  They’re always willing to admit that truth.  But I find that I do have to convince people that God really and truly loves them in spite of their sins.  That seems to be the more challenging truth for people to accept.

A Christmas Tree Miracle

I knew that it was too early to put up our Christmas tree—it’s not even Thanksgiving, yet, for crying out loud—but some type of Christmas mood took hold of Nadia and I and before we knew it, Christmas music was playing and the tree was up.

We did not hide the fact that the tree was up.  In fact, it is positioned by the large picture window in the front of our house and is, therefore, quite visible.  So, I guess I shouldn’t have been too surprised when the village authorities sent a S.W.A.T. team to the house.

“We know you’re in there.”  It was a voice outside on a bullhorn.  “And we know you’ve got your Christmas tree up before Thanksgiving.  Come out with your hands up, kicking the tree in front of you, and this can still end peacefully.”

“You can’t make me take it down!” I yelled as I lobbed several scented Christmas candles out the window.  The candles fell on the front lawn without much of an effect.  But it feels good to take a principled stand.

Well, they stormed the house and we were outnumbered.  Fortunately, no one was injured because we had pretty much forgotten they were out there at that point and were watching a rerun of the Simpsons.

As they were taking the tree out the front door in handcuffs, I said, “Fellas, wait a minute.  I’m begging you to just listen to me for a moment.”  They turned to look at me and it was totally quiet.  That’s when I told them several touching stories about my early memories of Christmas and the special meaning that it holds in my life.

As I finished talking I looked around the room and everyone was wiping tears from their eyes.

The S.W.A.T. team officer in charge said, “You know what?  We don’t care if this is in violation of Village Code 347-13(b), our hearts have been touched.  Darn it!  You can keep your tree up, after all.”

The next thing you know, we were all hugging and laughing and they even helped us place the tree back in its position and put the star on top.  Then we all held hands and sang “Hark The Herald, Angels Sing.”  I don’t have to tell you, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house as we sang the final chorus.

That’s when I woke up with a start and groggily rubbed my eyes.  I looked around trying to get my bearings and then I chuckled at another one of my crazy dreams.

Oh, but I’m not kidding, by the way, about putting up the Christmas tree today.  That part of the story is true.

As I was putting some of the left over ornaments back in the boxes and tidying up a bit, I saw a business card on the ground near the tree.  I picked it up and looked.  It read, “John Smith, S.W.A.T. Commander.”

“What?!?” I said, as I looked at the card in disbelief.

I think I’m starting to believe in Christmas miracles.

Thank You Veterans For Protecting Our Freedoms

Some people like the opinions I share on this blog and others probably don’t.  But it’s wonderful and important that we have this freedom of expression, isn’t it?  There are people who have fought and, in many cases, died to protect this incredible freedom of expression.  I honor and appreciate those people.  Thank you veterans!

Thankful For Our Veterans

When you serve on behalf of others; when you put yourself in harm’s way on behalf of others; when you give of yourself on behalf of others; when you do these things in order to provide protection and freedom for others; you are doing something good, noble and right.  I am thankful for the men and women who have served and who continue to serve in our armed forces—what you do is significant!  God bless you all!

The Person In Front Of You

Not sure what kind of work God has for you to do?  Well, consider this: You and I can be sincere, loving, authentic followers of Jesus every day, right where we are—wherever that may be.  Who’s in front of you right now?  Bringing the light of Christ to that person is the work God has for you.

Twitter Account Was Hacked

My Twitter account was hacked yesterday.  Please accept my apology for the inconvenience it may have caused any of you.  I have changed my password and fired the internet security team that handles my account (that would be Jasper and Goldie).  I was going to advise everyone to simply ignore any strange postings which might come from my account but then it occurred to me that might include some of my actual messages.

In an effort to set the record straight, I wish to publicly state that: 1) I have never made the claim to have been abducted by an alien race of Elvis look-alikes; 2) I do not hate all puppies; 3) I am not requesting that $250,000 be wired to a bank account to pay for my release from a Turkish prison;  and 4) I have never made any threatening or unkind remarks about UFC fighters calling them all a bunch of “pansy wimps.”

Thank you for your gracious attention to this matter.

A Life That Speaks Volumes

Sometimes I think, “How can a person make any kind of significant impact for God in this world in which we live?”  The answer that comes back to me is:  Don’t worry about making an impact, that’s not your concern.  Do this:  Cultivate a vital, genuine, relationship with God that truly makes a difference in your own life.  That will speak volumes.

Growth Is Uncomfortable

We often feel uncomfortable and uncertain—maybe even a little bit fearful—when we are growing and making progress because growth requires that we stretch and take new unfamiliar actions.  But as we know, growth is an important part of being fully alive.  So, the challenge is to feel uncomfortable but move forward anyhow.

Glorify God, Not Self

“Any effort that has self-glorification as its final endpoint is bound to end in disaster.” -- Robert Pirsig.  We were not made to bring glory to ourselves.  We were made to bring glory to God.

E-Flash From Dan, 11/7/12

Dear E-Flash Friends;

Peter Kreeft and Ronald Tacelli write, “…A word for boredom in general does not exist in any pre-modern language.” [Handbook of Christian Apologetics].  The point they are making is that in terms of human history the concept of “boredom” is a modern development.

I don’t know enough about history to know if this is true, or not.  But if there is some degree of truth to it, it is interesting to me that those of us who live in a time when we can receive a constant flow of messages from television, computers, radios, ipods, smart phones, radio, tablets, nooks, kindles, etc., are more likely to be bored than those who did not have these technological devices.

What does it say about all of the messages we receive or, perhaps, our capacity to process all of this stimulation if we find ourselves bored in spite of it all?  On the other hand, the people who did not have this continual stimulation, apparently, didn’t even have a word for “boredom.”  Interesting, huh?

I’m not anti-technology, I like this stuff.  But our impressive communication devices have their limits when it comes to living life fully.

I think I’ll unplug for a while and spend some time praying—no technology involved, just God and I.

This was on my mind today, so I thought I would share it with you.

Hope you have a great day!

Love and blessings,

Dan

The Great Privilege of Voting

Most of the people, in the history of the world, did not have the opportunity to cast a vote in order to determine who would be in the positions of governance over the land in which they lived.  The right to vote seems normal and rather unremarkable for many of us but, actually, it’s an unusual privilege.  I know our system of government is imperfect and it can be frustrating to some of us, but I am extremely thankful to live in a country that considers voting to be one of my rights as a citizen.  Being a citizen of the United States of America is one of the great undeserved blessings of my life.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to step out of the door of my office, walk about 40 yards to my left and cast my vote.  (When people ask me if I voted, I usually chuckle because I would have to be one of the laziest people in the state of Illinois to neglect the act of voting since my polling place is right here in the church where I work.)

P.S.:  Hey, I wonder… do you think the election judges would get ticked off if I asked them to just go ahead and bring one of the voting machines into my office for a few minutes while I voted?  Hmm, I better not push my luck, huh?

The Challenge of Speaking The Truth

In the Bible, it is assumed that, among followers of Christ, we will lovingly, humbly speak truth into each other’s lives.  It is assumed that, in the church, we will be willing to be open, vulnerable, and very honest with each other.  This is challenging to consider for those of us who live in a culture in which independence and autonomy are so highly valued.

E-Flash From Dan, 11/3/12

Dear E-Flash Friends;

There were quite a few times that Jesus said this phrase: “Do not be afraid.”  It is interesting that he said the phrase in situations where we wouldn’t find it unusual for a person to experience some fear.  We’re going to talk about this challenge to “not be afraid” at the services this Sunday.  I hope you’re planning to join us!

And since you’ll be here, already.  Make sure to hang around for the Annual Chili Cook-Off after the 11 o’clock service.  The Chili Cook-Off is a fundraiser for our Closed Captioned Youth Group; it’s a tasty lunch; and it’s a good way to get to know some folks at church.  It’s a terrific event and you’re invited!

Oh, and don’t forget that we change the clocks this weekend, too.  Set you clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday night.  (If not, I’ll see you early Sunday morning!)

Love and blessings,

Dan

The People God Has Put In Our Lives

Sometimes God puts a person in our lives from whom we would never expect to learn anything of importance or value.  And then this person surprises us.  And we discover that there was, in fact, divine wisdom in this relational connection.  The people God has put into our lives are there for a reason.

Seeing God And Putting Things In Their Proper Perspective

Here’s a conversation thread from my Facebook page.

My initial post:
When we enter into God’s presence on the other side of this earthly existence everything else that we’ve ever experienced will finally be put in its proper perspective.

Comment from my friend:
Proof text. Must have proof text old friend! I bang my head against the wall trying to get perspective on this side, and you're telling me to chill-out and wait 'til I get on the other side? I think He gave me this curious, searching heart (or this doubting skeptics mind, whatever it is?)

My response to the comment:
I believe God gave you that curious, searching heart, too.  And I think it’s good and right for you to try to get perspective on this side of eternity.  Don’t stop your search for understanding.  (Although, you might want to ease up on the banging your head against the wall.)  However, a wise search involves the understanding that we are finite—there are some things we simply will not come to understand on this side.  If you cannot come to terms with this reality it will result in increased head-against-the-wall sessions and tremendous frustration.

Also, what we experience now is, by definition, incomplete because there is a wholly other experience that will happen when we leave this realm.  We cannot experience this other realm now, we can only experience it by crossing over.

“For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.” 1 Corinthians 13:12

I believe that the most significant part of this experience on the other side will be seeing God in a way that is fuller and more complete than we can see Him on this side of eternity.  And I believe that when we see Him in this complete way much of what we thought was so important, on this side, will be put into its proper perspective.

Line from an old Christian song:  “And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace.”

The Way In Which We Receive Difficult Truths

When we are confronted with truth about ourselves that we might not be too happy to hear or acknowledge, the way we receive that truth says a lot about our level of maturity.

God's Presence

When we enter into God’s presence on the other side of this earthly existence everything else that we’ve ever experienced will finally be put in its proper perspective.

Is Jesus Enough?

Sometimes, in Christianity, we ask the question: is Jesus enough?  Christian author, Larry Crabb gets at this issue in a penetrating way with these two questions.
“Do we actually want God more than anything else? Do we honestly believe we’d know real joy if we had Him and nothing else?” – Larry Crabb.

What God Has Done Says Something About Who You Are

Here’s a thought: When God created you and I, it was the intentional act of a perfect, Holy, all-powerful, being. That says something about who you are, doesn’t it? “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:13&14.

God Is Walking With Us

We can handle everything that comes our way today because the Almighty God who created the universe loves us and He is walking with us.  “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.” –Jesus, John 14:1.

Practice What You Preach, Bub!

Yesterday, I asked everyone to please silence their cell phones, as a courtesy to others, during the service at which I was officiating.  Less than one minute later, the fairly loud and obnoxious text message notification on my phone—which I thought was turned off—rang.

As you might guess, there was a very strong “Hey, Bub, practice what you preach!” vibe happening in the room at that moment.

Use Your Gifts!

Followers of Jesus are given abilities or insights that are referred to in the Bible as spiritual gifts.  “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” 1 Corinth. 12:7.  These gifts include but are not limited to things like encouragement, serving, teaching, leadership ability, prophecy, and giving.  In general, we will serve God most effectively when we are serving in the area of our giftedness.

Do you know your spiritual gifts?  Are you using your spiritual gifts?

E-Flash From Dan, October 26, 2012

Dear E-Flash Friends;

Jesus takes 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish and he feeds a crowd of over 5,000 people.  (Oddly enough, many of the folks reported that it tasted like chicken.)

As we reflect upon that story (not the chicken part, I made that up) we are reminded that we serve a God for whom all things are possible.  Are you a little bit excited when you think about that reality?  Good!  You should be excited.

We’ll be looking at that miracle story this Sunday and thinking about some truths revealed in the story that apply to our lives.  You won’t want to miss it!

Speaking of “not missing it.”  Our annual Trunk or Treat event is coming up this Sunday, from 2pm to 5pm. That’s right.  You know how you’ve heard about all the fun of Trunk or Treat?  Well, that’s happening this weekend.  In fact, we got so excited thinking about Trunk or Treat that we recorded a podcast to tell you about it.  Why not click on the link and take a listen?  It’s fun!

What’s Coming 10/28/12? Trunk or Treat Edition – Dan Marler with Andrea Rodman

We’re trusting that it’s going to be a terrific day here on Sunday and I’m praying God will bless all that happens.

Hope to see you!

Love and blessings,

Dan

Suffering Produces Growth

I was told, again recently, of a couple of instances in which people have dealt with struggles and difficulties and, yet, in the process learned important lessons and experienced significant growth. “Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”  Rom. 5:3-4

Living God's Way

God loves us and He wants us to live His way, not because He wants to kill all our fun, it’s actually the opposite of that.  He wants us to live His way because that is life in its fullest, greatest, most fulfilling sense.

Walking With God & Keeping First Things First

It’s possible to make a big deal out of things that are actually relatively minor.  And it’s also possible to give too little attention to matters of great consequence.  Walking closely with God can help us maintain the right perspective, keeping first things first.

4 Billion Year Old Meteorite Used As Doorstop

When I saw the headline in the photo to the left, earlier today, it cracked me up.  In fact, at first I thought it was a gag headline from the “Onion” or some other kind of humor web site.  But it’s a real news story.

There’s something oddly amusing to me about a family not realizing that this rock by their front door is a valuable item from outer space and so they are kicking it around and using it as a doorstop.  (Okay, I’m easily amused… I know.)

By the way, I’m going to go take a closer look at that large rock in our back yard.
