Why Try To Fight Against God?

Some people see God as an adversary. If you think about it, this is a strange position to take.

If there is no God then who are you fighting against? Why waste your time with an adversary who does not exist?

On the other hand, if there is an all-powerful, Supreme being why would you try to fight Him? There is absolutely no way to win.

The good news is that God does not view you and I as adversaries. He loves us. He wants what is best for us. In fact, the Bible tells us before we were inclined to make a move toward God He was already establishing His love for  us.

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

There’s no need to fight God. Recognize and embrace His unfailing love.

The Extraordinary Reality of God's Unfailing Love

It’s difficult for us to understand that God’s love for us is not conditional because our experience in life is that love always has some type of conditions attached.  So for example, no matter how much someone loves us we are capable of behaving in such a way that the person could possibly reach a point of exasperation and basically say, “I can’t take it anymore.  I’m done with you and your stuff!”

If a person can say “I’m done with you,” and exclude you from his/her life then the person’s love was conditional.  And by the way, I’m not being critical of this fact I’m suggesting we can all understand such a reality.

But this is why it is extraordinary to think that we cannot do something to make God reach a boiling point at which He says, “I can’t take it anymore.  I’m done with you and your stuff!”

God doesn’t love us when we finally get our act together in such a way that we deserve His love.  He loves us, first.  He loves us before we ever do the right thing.  He loves us even if we never do the right thing.

Please understand, it is obviously good for us to do the right thing.  God wants us to do the right thing.  This post is not an attempt to encourage people to do the wrong thing.  The point I’m trying to make has to do with God’s unconditional love.  His love is not based on whether we do the right thing.  This incredible truth is made known to us through verses like this one found in Romans 5:8…

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

No one will ever love you the way God loves you.  His love is complete, total, perfect and unfailing.  The more I understand this truth the more it makes me want to love Him back.

God's Love Alive In Us

Jesus says something that can be very hard for us to live by.  He says, “Love your enemies!” And, “Pray for those who persecute you!”  The capacity for anyone to love in this extraordinary way has to do with God.  This kind of love is only likely to happen when God is alive in us.  So then, it is His love at work in us and through us.  In a way, what Jesus is saying is that we are called to the privilege of being agents in this world of the unfailing love of God.

We Want To Be Fully Known And Fully Loved

One of the most significant longings that we have in life is this: We desire that someone would know us—know everything about us, the entire truth of who we are—and yet still love us anyhow.  We long to be fully known and yet fully loved.  This is part of the significance of God’s love because this deep longing is fulfilled in a God who really does know everything about us and He loves us perfectly and unfailingly!

God's Unfailing Love. Wow!

Look up at the sky at night and try to think about how vast it is.  There’s a sense in which it is incomprehensible to our minds.  In the Psalms this basic concept is used to attempt to provide a description of God’s “unfailing love” for us.  “Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens…” Psalm 36:5.  You and I have dignity, value and worth because we are perfectly, completely and unfailingly loved beyond any capacity for measurement by the Creator and Lord of the Universe.

Receiving God's Love So We Can Give Love To Others

It’s important for us to really believe that God loves us in order to generously extend love to others.  People who love others willingly and graciously are people who truly understand that they are recipients of unconditional, unfailing love.

God Is The Source of Love

When the Bible says that God is love it’s not trying to help us understand that if we love God then He will love us back.  What it is saying is that love is part of the very nature of God and, therefore, all true love has God as its source. This is why we can know with confidence that God loves us unconditionally.  This is extraordinarily good news!

When We Understand God's Love, Fear Diminishes

A long time ago, a friend told me that she feels a low level sense of fear, almost all the time.  It is not God’s intention that we would live this way.  When we acknowledge and fully embrace God’s total and unfailing love for us, we don’t experience fear.  When we understand the truth of God’s love we experience peace, joy, assurance, and the fullness of life!

Extending God's Perfect, Unfailing Love

Here’s an interesting thought to ponder: Our love for others is not supposed to be the best that we’re capable of offering. We’re called to offer something much better than that. We are called to extend to others the perfect, unfailing love that God gives to us.  Jesus said: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13:34.
