Yia Yia Palooza and My Bruce Lee Present

At Yia Yia Palooza, this evening, I enjoyed the singing, the joke-telling, the dancing, the outstanding story-telling and the “all in” commitment of the worship team’s version of 12 Days of Christmas. (This version of the 12 Days of Christmas was fun, hilarious and just a tiny bit puzzling all at the same time. It was surely the most entertaining version of the song I’ve seen.)

But one of my favorite moments of the night came after the program was over and Faith walked up to me holding out a gift bag.

I said, “What is this?”

She said, “It’s for you.”

“For me?” I asked.

“Yes, it’s a Christmas present.”

I reached into the bag with curiosity and pulled out a Bruce Lee figurine collector’s item.

“This is AWESOME!!!” I cried out in joy. That’s right, joy! Just like we’ve been talking about at church for the past few weeks.

Ahhh… the magic of Christmas.

The Creepy Doll Is In My Office Looking At Me

Andrea came into my office last night as we were closing up the building and she had a doll wrapped in a blanket in her arms.

She said, “We’re going to be using this for the nativity scene at Yia Yia Palooza.  Do you mind if I keep it in your office until then?”

I said, “No, I don’t mind.”

Chuckling, Andrea set the doll in one of the chairs on the other side of my desk.

I did a double take and said, “Is that Rachel’s creepy doll I wrote about last year—the one that frightened several people on the plane?”

Now, she was laughing, “Yep, that’s it.”  And she adjusted the doll so that it was sitting up in the chair.

So, this creepy doll has been sitting in the chair across from my desk staring at me today.  Every now and then, out of the corner of my eye, I get the impression that it’s moving.  But I’m pretty sure it isn’t.

If I wind up missing sometime over the next few days it will be reasonable to request that the police put out an all-points bulletin initiating a search for this doll.

The Stormy Chili Cook-Off of 2013

I had just dug into a tasty helping of chili at our Annual Chili Cook-Off when someone approached me with a concerned look on her face.

“Dan, my husband called to say that a tornado has touched down in Wilmington.  That’s not far from here.”

I had heard the weather was going to get rough but I had been busy and hadn’t really thought too much about it.  Looking out the large windows I saw heavy rain, blowing sideways.  It was dark… at 12:30 in the afternoon.

I thought, “Hmm, I better let people know what’s happening.”

“Can I have your attention, please?!?  Everyone!!!  Please!” I called out several times.  The fellowship hall grew quiet.  “Folks, we want to let you know that a tornado has touched down in Wilmington, Illinois which is not too far from here.  We have some people who are monitoring the weather.  We’ll provide updates as the situation changes.”

There was a moment of quiet, a few nodding heads and then everyone went back to talking and eating chili.  It’s very hard to stop our folks from enjoying good food.

It wasn’t too long before we were getting reports of tornados touching down in even closer locations: Frankfort, Tinley Park, Alsip and even at the corner of 111th Street & Cicero Avenue—which is about 2 blocks from the church.

(One person even told me there was a very small tornado ripping through my office.  But that just turned out to be Bob Miller and some of the other ushers, wrestling.)
.
In the meantime, most of the folks hung around, the votes were counted and Shital Thakkar won first place in the Chili Cook-Off.  His “Internet throw-down strategy” seemed like it might be a bit of a risky maneuver to me, but it paid off.  Mark Bogard took second place.

I didn’t get a final count but I believe there were only one or two fist fights, so, it was a quiet year from that standpoint.

(And I hate to disappoint, but I did not do any of my ninja moves.  Sorry, perhaps next year.  Or… you never know… I’m not making any promises… but… Yia Yia Palooza is coming soon…!)

As I was heading home, after the event was over—across the somewhat flooded church parking lot—the sun began to peek through the clouds.  I looked at the temperature on the sign at the bank:  It was 62 degrees with just a slight breeze and sunny.

I shook my head and laughed knowing that I would only need to wait for 20 minutes, or so, until the next “season” arrived here in Chicago.  Who knows?  Maybe it would bring a lovely winter snow.  It’s always fun to make a snowman after you’ve had a few hearty bowls of chili!

E-Flash From Dan -- December 8, 2011

Dear E-Flash Friends;

For hundreds of years, during the Christmas season, children all across the world have gathered in Oak Lawn, Illinois and completely forgotten about Santa Claus as they waited with eager anticipation for the event that we all know as Yia Yia Palooza.

…Oh, wait a minute.  That’s right.  This year will only be the second time we’ve ever held Yia Yia Palooza.  Well, never mind about all the children gathering for hundreds of years, then.  However, a pretty good sized group of us gathered for the Promiseland Christmas program (a.k.a., Yia Yia Palooza) last year and we had a wonderful time.

Even now, my mind is harkening back to the music, the skits, the tasty snacks, the sound system troubles, the children’s warm smiles, the police SWAT team intervention—it all made Yia Yia Palooza a magical night to remember.  I think you’re going to want to be here.

I invite you to join us for this year’s Promiseland Christmas program, Yia Yia Palooza, this Sunday, December 11th at 5pm.  I don’t know about you, but nothing could keep me away!

(Unless TBS runs that “Barnaby Jones” marathon, again.  I’d definitely stay home for that.)

Also, I hope you’re planning to be at the service on Sunday morning (9am or 11am).  The worship team is planning a terrific service, we will be having Communion, and I will be bringing a practical message from an interesting section of Scripture, Ecclesiastes 11:1-5.  For sure, nothing could keep me away from the Sunday morning services…even that “Barnaby Jones” marathon.

Hope to see you this Sunday morning… and evening.

Blessings,

Dan
