Would A Mom Scare Her Kid?

One day, many years ago when I was a kid, I was walking through our house and it seemed strangely quiet. I knew my brother was not home but I did not know where the others were. It was late afternoon and I had just gotten home from school.

“Well it’s too early for dad to be home from work,” I thought. “Mom must be at the neighbor’s house. So Cheryl is probably with her.”

I walked through a short little hallway area to a door which led into our garage.

“It looks like I have the run of the house,” I chuckled to myself and pulled the door open.

Suddenly a figure jumped toward me from the shadows shouting, “Booo!!!”

I leaped in fear… surprised and startled, heart racing, skin tingling, frontal cortex on high alert.

(…Actually, I have no idea what the frontal cortex does when a person is startled but it seemed like a nice little touch, didn’t it?)

It took a second but I quickly recognized my mother’s smiling face. She laughed and said, “Gotcha!”

I regained my composure and said, “No you didn’t. I knew you were there.”

She continued to laugh, knowingly, and said, “Oh no. I got you.”

You might be thinking, “What kind of mom would do such a thing to her dear, precious, adorable, exceptionally bright son? …Or to Dan too, for that matter?”

A fantastic mom—a wonderful mom. That’s who!

I could provide all kinds of sentimental and tender-hearted reasons why I miss my mom. But she was fun, silly and playful. And that’s part of why I miss her, too.

P.S. With this story from my childhood in mind, are the pieces of the puzzle falling into place? Are you beginning to see, now?

Story of A Wisconsin Farm Girl And Her Influence - Happy Mother's Day 2014

A farm girl from Wisconsin moved to Chicago and met a farm boy from Mississippi.  They fell in love, got married and had three children.  (That ended up working out pretty well for me.  And hey, most people would agree that two out of three normal kids ain’t bad.)

This girl from Wisconsin had a love and devotion to Jesus that was authentic.  And the influence of her genuine faith is one of the reasons why I’m a follower of Jesus today.

She’s gone now, but she is forever in my heart.  And, of course, Alice Marler is always on my mind on Mother’s Day.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms!

Buying Flowers And The Guy Bond

Jewel was bustling tonight.  I guess I should clarify that I’m referring to “Jewel” the grocery store.  I saw several men at the store carrying flowers that, no doubt, they were buying to give to their mothers or, perhaps, their wives.

I was carrying flowers and I saw another guy who was also carrying flowers.  He smiled at me and nodded as we passed each other.

I didn’t know this man and he didn’t know me.  There was no reason for a smile and a nod, except this:  The Bond.  The Guy Bond.  It’s a bond that needs no words.  In fact, words will often tend to ruin the Guy Bond because words are so loaded with unnecessary letters and syllables and wordy-ness.  The Guy Bond is a bond between guys because guys know.  There are situations in which we simply have to look at each other and we know.

Some of you are reading this and you might be wondering, “What are you talking about?  What in the heck is the Guy Bond?  What do you know?”

You see, that’s the problem.  If I have to explain the Guy Bond then there’s no way you can really understand the Guy Bond.  Oh sure, an explanation might help you grasp some basic pieces of information in a very rudimentary and unsatisfactory way.  But the only way to really know the Guy Bond is to be a guy and… well… to experience the Guy Bond.

Don’t feel bad if you don’t know the Guy Bond.  The Guy Bond just “is.”  It’s like the fact that gravity works.  No one feels bad about the reality of gravity.  That would be silly.  We know that gravity just “is.”

On my way out of the store a woman saw me carrying the flowers and she said, “Oh, those are very pretty.  Are those for your wife or your mother?”

I smiled and said, “They’re for my wife.”  And then I thought to myself, “Nice try.  But that involved way too many words.  It does not count as a Guy Bond.”

Thanks, Moms. We Love You!

God tells us, through His word, to “Honor your father and mother.”  That’s what we’re going to be doing at our services today.  To all the moms out there, remember that what you do is very, very, very, very important.  (I’d add a couple more “verys” but you get the point, right?)  We thank God for you and we love you!!!

E-Flash From Dan -- May 12

Dear E-Flash Friends;

This Sunday is Mother’s Day.  We have a terrific service planned.  The men will be leading the worship this Sunday so get ready for the energy, enthusiasm and fun that always happens as they help us to praise our great and worthy God!

Of course, we will be honoring our moms and telling them how wonderful they are, too.

Also, the Mountain Movers discipleship group is having a bake sale after both the 9am and 11am services.  I’m already getting excited about chocolate and it’s not even Sunday, yet!  (Oh yeah, that’s right, I’m always excited about chocolate.)

Hope to see you this Sunday!

Love and blessings,

Dan

P.S.

Check out the new God Stories Podcast.  This is an audio podcast in which I talk with people about God's activity in their lives. In fact, I really hope you will listen because this one is the first "official" God Stories Podcast! (I can tell you're excited. Me, too!) This podcast features my interview with Brittany Serenas in which she tells her God story.

What A Treat For The Moms!

As it stands currently my sermon for this sunday will run approximately 2.5 hours. Don't worry though I'm going to trim it back a good 7 to 8 minutes. What a treat for the moms, huh?

Honor Your Father and Mother

I was blessed to have had a mom who was one of the kindest, sweetest, most gracious people I have ever known. Her genuine love of God has positively influenced my brother, sister and I in a way that will continue for the rest of our lives. The Bible says, “Honor your father and mother”.  I gladly do that, today.  And Happy Mother’s Day to all moms!!!

It Honors Our Moms When We Live Wisely

One of the ways that we honor our moms is by living our lives wisely.  It honors the home that we come from when we live with wisdom.  And all true wisdom begins with God.  "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10

Chest Pains, Near Death Experiences & Being A Smartypants

Recently I’ve been doing some reading and study on a topic that is referred to as Near Death Experience or NDE.  When a typical NDE occurs, the person’s heart stops beating and with no blood pumping the cessation of brain activity soon follows.  At that point, the person is dead, clinically speaking.  And conventional thinking within the medical field would suggest that the person would then have no consciousness of any kind.

In hundreds of case studies, however (actually it’s probably thousands) people who have “died” and yet been revived reported consciousness including extraordinary “afterlife” experiences during the time when they are clinically dead.  Some people believe that these NDEs confirm the reality of some type of life after death and others remain unconvinced.  But enough of these NDEs have been documented that we can now be certain this is not just the silly imaginings of a couple of odd people.

Last week, I was reading a book about one of the largest NDE studies that has been undertaken thus far, and several times, during the course of my reading, I thought, “it would be interesting to have one of these Near Death Experiences.”  The description of NDEs by those who have had them sounds amazing.

Yesterday, I experienced a mild discomfort in my chest that very quickly turned into a fairly severe pain.  I took some deep breaths thinking it would go away.  Hoping it would go away.  It didn’t.  I wanted to convince myself that “hey, this is nothing” but the pain was real enough and persistent enough that even though I wanted to deny it, I could not.

I began thinking, “Oh man, I’m probably going to have to go to the ER.”  If you’ve been to the ER lately, you know that death can actually seem, momentarily, like a more attractive alternative.

(Okay, I’m just kidding, relax.  Can’t a guy joke a little?  It helps release tension, you know.)

As I was walking from the church to my house and the pain in my chest continued, the NDEs that I had recently been reading about came to mind.  I thought to myself, “Alright, Mr. Smartypants you were thinking it would be interesting to have an NDE, huh?”

And then I said to God, “Lord, are you going to give me one of those ‘be-careful-what-you-ask-for’ lessons?”

Well, I’m happy to report that I did not have a Near Death Experience.  (The closest I came to death was when my friend Greg looked at one of the numbers on my monitor in the ER and suggested to myself and one of the nurses that it seemed to indicate I only had 99 minutes left to live.  With friends like these, who needs… oh, never mind, you know the line.)

So, no NDE occurred and all of my medical tests indicate that I did not have a heart attack.  In fact, I was told that my heart is very strong and healthy.

What happened then?  What was the cause of the chest pains?  Well, they don’t know for sure.  But the cardiologist said to me, “Mr. Marler, when a person has such an extraordinary amount of muscular development, like yourself, sometimes the kung fu power in the muscles can cause a constriction in the chest…”

You know, I would go on with the cardiologist’s comments but I sense that I’m losing some of you.

It’s good to be alive!  And, as always, God is still good!

Love and blessings,

Dan

*Sorry the picture's a little blurry.  This is
shortly before the stress test.

P.S.  The good news is that I will be at church on Mothers’s Day.  …At least, that’s good news to me.  And I hope to see you, too.  “The guys” are leading the worship as a treat for the moms!  It’s going to be TERRIFIC!!!  And hey, I’ve got a great idea, bring your mom to church with you on Sunday and then take her for a lovely brunch following the service.  What do you say?  (And don’t forget to buy her a nice card and some flowers.)

P.P.S.  I know that many of you were praying for me and I am so thankful for your prayers on my behalf.  I am TRULY BLESSED by God to have such wonderful friends!

Here's Greg right around the time
of his prognosis of my condition.

The Blessing Of Having A Great Mom

One of the greatest blessings of my life was to have a mom who loved me irrationally. I had a mom who was a profound positive spiritual influence on our family. She was a loving, kind, generous, fun, person and she was an absolutely authentic follower of Jesus Christ.  Her faith was sincere and genuine. I am a follower of Jesus today, in large part, due to this wonderful woman.

E-Flash From Dan, Mother's Day 2010, And More...

Dear E-Flash Friends;

This Sunday, May 9th, we will be celebrating Mother’s Day by honoring moms.  Hey, it’s a biblical thing to do, it’s even one of the 10 Commandments.  I hope you will invite your mom to come to church and then take her out afterwards for lobster and caviar.  Then I hope you will take her to a luxury car dealer and allow her to pick out any car that she chooses.  Then I hope you will lavish pearls and diamonds and other types of fine gold jewelry on her….

…Oops, sorry about that.  Every now and then I get in some type of strange mode and I start typing things with no consideration for logic or making sense.  I apologize, I’ll try not to let it happen again.

Okay, forget about the lobster and the luxury car and the expensive jewelry.  But we’re still going to honor moms this Sunday and I hope you will be able to be here.  “The Guys” will be leading the worship, that’s right “The Guys”—and that’s always something special.  We are praying and believing that God will be greatly glorified and that moms will be wonderfully blessed…and that somehow, we will all have a great time and be challenged in the faith, as well.

If you say, “Oh, come on, all those things are not likely to happen in ONE service.”

I say, “Well, be here on Sunday and let’s find out.  That’s what we’re praying for.”

And the great time of worship together isn’t the whole story.  This Sunday our Mountain Movers discipleship group will also be having a Bake Sale fundraiser which will include selling “Biggest Loser” cookbooks.  I love it!  A “bake sale” in which we also offer cookbooks with recipes that will help you lose weight.  This proves that the Mountain Movers are becoming incredible disciples of Jesus because you have to have a fantastic amount of faith—mountain moving faith—to sell cookies, brownies, and cakes with frosting, along with a cookbook containing diet recipes.  The sheer beauty of that combination is likely to make this their best fundraiser ever!  In fact, in honor of that fundraiser I’m going on a very strict diet until dinner tonight, and then I’m going to eat 2 or 3 packages of Twinkies, followed up with a large chocolate sundae.

No, no, don’t thank me.  It’s the least I can do.

Moms, we love you and we hope to see you on Sunday!

“Honor your father and mother, as the LORD your God commanded you. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.”  Deuteronomy 5:16

Blessings,

Dan

E-Flash From Dan, Re: Mother's Day 2008

Dear E-Flash Friends;

Imagine going for an ultra sound and during the procedure you hear the technician say, “Wow!?! That’s strange.”

A little bit concerned you ask, “What? What is it?”

The technician responds, “I’ve never seen this before.”

Now, you’re starting to feel a little bit of panic, “What are you seeing? What’s wrong?”

And the technician says, “It’s not anything wrong, it’s just that . . . well . . . I don’t know how to say this, but . . . your child is God.”

After a brief fainting spell, you wake up and realize it was all just a crazy dream. So, you chuckle and then make a quick trip to the bakery to get some Angel Food cake.

I’m bringing this up, because I’d like to encourage us to consider what it must have felt like for a young girl named Mary to hear this strange and perplexing and flattering and scary and utterly unique message from an angel: “Oh, by the way, you’re baby is the Savior and long awaited Messiah, the specially anointed King who will rule FOREVER. He is conceived in you by the Holy Spirit and he is the Holy one. So, that’s all I needed to tell you, I’ll see you later!”

It’s the Greatest Challenge Any Mom Ever Faced, and that’s what we’ll be talking about this Mother’s Day, May 11th.

I invite you to join us and hope that you can bring your mom to church. We will honor the moms and tell them how much we love them. We’ll laugh, we’ll cry, we’ll reminisce, and then we’ll start the service and it will get even better, still.

Mother’s Day 2008: “The Greatest Challenge Any Mom Ever Faced”

God bless and see you Sunday!
