We all make judgments continuously, all throughout the day, every day. Making judgments is a necessary and inescapable aspect of life. The judgments Jesus calls us to avoid are opinions on issues we cannot know, such as a person’s motives, the ultimate condition of their heart, or their eternal destiny.

I think there are quite a few people who take the scripture that says "thou shall not judge" and turn it into a blanket comment because the don't realize that we do have to judge, and lovingly correct if necessary. We just have to make sure that logs out of our eye first. :)
I think you put it well - avoid opinions on issues we cannot know. I'm going to have to remember that.
