Do Yourself A Favor And Do Not Debate Someone Who Denies Logic

If you are debating an issue and the person with whom you are debating admits that his position is logically invalid and yet he says “but I’m holding this position anyhow” then it is time to immediately stop debating. There is no point in talking about the subject any longer. Do yourself a favor and either end the conversation or switch the subject to something inconsequential like last night’s episode of Judge Judy.

(By the way, the scenario I mentioned above may sound so silly that you would be tempted to think such a thing could never happen. However, something very similar to what I described actually happened to me.)

Our culture’s embrace of relativism has led people to believe we can hold illogical positions on issues or, even, deny reality without any consequences because, after all, everything is ultimately a matter of our own personal choice and we are the creators of our own truth.

I recommend you keep this in mind because it will be helpful: Whenever we deny truth, logic, or reality—in the long run—it will not go well.

Sometimes Minor Issues Are Not Worthwhile

It’s easy for people who take their faith seriously to get into arguments about minor religious issues that are not worth fighting about.  Obviously, it is perfectly acceptable to debate certain issues.  And if the issues can be discussed without unnecessary anger it might even be helpful.  Also, it is important to remain committed to the truth.

But when minor issues that are not essential to the faith tear apart relationships and genuine love for each other is compromised then arguments about minor issues have become unhealthy, unproductive, and not worth it.

The Main Goal Is Not To Win Arguments

For Christians, the primary goal of learning and growth is not to win arguments.  Here’s a good way of putting it: “All followers of Jesus should remember that the purpose of study is not to accumulate facts or argue a case, but to know the living, risen Christ. He is not the culmination of a debate, but our living, loving Savior.” ~Dr. Rick Cornish

When There's No Point In Talking Anymore

Sometimes a person wants to argue or debate just because they’re ornery and no amount of rational discussion or logic will affect their position.  In this case, it’s probably wise to respectfully excuse yourself from the discussion and go do something more constructive like sit in a dark room with your eyes closed.
