This blog contains comments and teaching regarding living the Christian faith and comments on the intersection of faith and many other aspects of life from pop culture to science. It also has some stories--hopefully they are amusing stories--from my life. ~Dan

A Grand Drama Is Unfolding... Right?
We were not brought into existence to live
meaningless, insignificant lives. God does not create things without a purpose.
A grand drama is unfolding. We have been created to be a part of it and to play
a role in it.
I realize most of us we read lofty words like this on
a regular basis and what I’ve written here can seem like more of the same old,
tired verbiage.
“Sure Dan, a grand drama is unfolding… uh huh… blah,
blah, blah.”
But the alternative is to believe life is basically
a fairly pointless, random accident that occurs for an incredibly brief period,
relatively speaking, and then it’s over and we’re gone.
This is not intended to be a powerful argument for
the truth of the “grand drama” view of things. This is simply how I express the
fact that I am far more inspired by the idea of a life of genuine significance.
“For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus
to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10

We Are God's Masterpiece!
It is exciting and encouraging to think we were
created by God very intentionally and purposefully. We are not random accidents
or mistakes. In fact, of everything throughout the universe God has created we
are considered His crowning achievement. We, alone, are made in His image. We
are His “masterpiece.”
(I know, there are some days I do not feel like such
a masterpiece, either. After all, I have a mirror. But who am I to argue with
God?)
Here’s a passage from the Bible which addresses the
matter: “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus,
so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10

Living The Unique Lives To Which God Has Called Us
It is an indisputable fact that there are aspects of
every single human being which make us completely unique. In other words, even
though this can come off sounding trite it is, nevertheless, true that you are one-of-a-kind.
For instance, no has had the exact same experiences you
have had.
No one has the same background as you.
No one else has your personality.
No one has interacted with the same mixture of people in
the same way as you.
No one else has the same combination of skills and
aptitudes.
No one else has the same way of viewing life as you.
So, we don’t have to do what everyone else does. We don’t
have to be what everyone else tries to be.
Since God went ahead and made us in this tremendously
unique way it would seem to follow He has a unique calling and purpose for our
lives. Our objective is to understand what God has for us to do and be obedient
to Him. If we are engaged in the unique life God has called us to then we will
be doing the right thing.
“For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in
Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

God Had Things In Mind For Us Before We Were Born
Do you believe that God had good, important, helpful,
Christ-honoring, Kingdom-advancing works in mind for your life before you were
ever even born? That’s what the Bible
seems to be saying here: “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus
to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians
2:10 That’s exciting to think about,
huh?
