This blog contains comments and teaching regarding living the Christian faith and comments on the intersection of faith and many other aspects of life from pop culture to science. It also has some stories--hopefully they are amusing stories--from my life. ~Dan

Someone asked me about Finley...
At
church, yesterday, someone who has seen some of the videos I’ve posted of our
dog, Finley, said to me, “That Finley is quite a character. Is she always
stirring up as much trouble as it looks like from your posts online?”
The
answer to that question is: No, of course not. Are you kidding? Heck no! My
goodness, she isn’t ALWAYS stirring up trouble.
…Every
once in a while she sleeps.

Rachel has hit the jackpot today!
One of
our local grocery stores has a promotion in which game tickets are awarded to
customers when purchases are made. The larger the purchase the more game tickets
are given. Certain game tickets are “winners” which typically involves small
prizes.
Rachel
loves collecting the game tickets. I’m not even sure if we’ve ever won much of
anything playing this game, over the years. Perhaps some small items. But it’s
the game tickets that are part of the thrill for Rachel. Having lots of game
tickets is victory, all by itself, for her.
Today we
made a fairly large purchase so we received, probably, a dozen game tickets, or
more, when we checked out. In addition to that, Rachel had a winning ticket
which awarded two more game tickets. Ahh, so sweet! She had lots of tickets.
But then
as we were walking out the door, after the check-out, a woman saw that Rachel
was very excited about the game tickets. She approached us and held out about 7
or 8 tickets that she had just received after making her purchase.
She said,
“Are you playing the game?”
Rachel’s
eyes lit up.
I said, “Yes,
we are.”
The woman
offered her tickets to Rachel. “Here, you can have these. I’m not playing,” she
said.
We
thanked the woman for her kindness and generosity. As we drove home, Rachel was
beaming! She has hit the jackpot today!
Unknowingly Arguing With Themselves?
Sometimes
I see people post statements regarding positions they hold on an issue and
then, later, they post statements which contradict the previous statements
which they have posted. In other words, I believe they are, unknowingly,
arguing with themselves…online.
And I
have friends who say there is nothing interesting happening online. 😃

My simple description of "John Wick"
**SPOILER
ALERT**
I watched
the edited/televised version of “John Wick” recently. This is my overly simple and, admittedly, incomplete description.
In the movie, one of the
villains intentionally, cruelly kills John Wick’s puppy.
The puppy
was a gift left to John posthumously by the love of his life, his wife, after
she suffers an untimely, heartbreaking death due to illness.
So let’s
think about this for a moment: a bad guy kills a puppy—which is an awfully
terrible thing to do—but it also happens to be a puppy of tremendously special
value to John. It is a puppy he loves. The puppy is a final treasured connection
between a grieving John and the wife he adored.
Even if
you have never seen the movie you may have already guessed, by now, that this
is a huge mistake on the part of the bad guy. You’ve put those pieces together,
right?
The rest
of the movie is an incredibly potent and vivid illustration of this important
point: Do NOT kill John Wick’s puppy.
