This blog contains comments and teaching regarding living the Christian faith and comments on the intersection of faith and many other aspects of life from pop culture to science. It also has some stories--hopefully they are amusing stories--from my life. ~Dan

Don't Give Up, Keep Trying
Sometimes our efforts seem to meet with resistance
and failure so frequently that it can feel pointless to keep trying. To say
this is disappointing is a vast understatement. In fact, when we run into this
reality the primary challenge is to keep trying because the inclination to give
up becomes so powerful.
These kinds of thoughts enter our minds, “Why should
I keep banging my head against the wall? Just settle for something less.”
Since I have had the experience which I describe
above on more than a few occasions, I found myself agreeing with and finding an
unusual form of challenge and inspiration in this quote from Winston Churchill: “Success is going from failure to failure
without losing enthusiasm.”

Don't Get Tired of Doing Good
When we are doing what is right we will often encounter
resistance. In fact, it can seem like
doing the right thing is a battle. After
battling for a while we may feel like throwing in the towel. We get weary.
But I challenge you today… Don’t give up! Remember that God is with you. Hang in there. “So let's not get tired of doing what is good.
At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up.”

The Wisdom of Saying Nothing
Recently, a staff person at a local restaurant was
briefly telling me about some struggles in her
life. After she talked about her frustration and
her weariness—in an effort to be helpful and encouraging—I told her, “Don’t
give up!”
She responded by saying, “Sometimes it’s best to
give up.”
I said, “Well, I guess that’s true. You may come to
a point where it’s not worth fighting anymore and it would be best to give up.”
She said, “Gee whiz, what kind of advice is
that? It’s pretty discouraging.”
Have I mentioned that sometimes it’s best to simply
say nothing?

Keep Going! Don't Give Up!
It’s important for us to be able to bounce back and keep going after failures, disappointments, and other types of negative experiences. How we handle difficulties is an indication of how well equipped we are to handle life. Don’t give up and remember God is still with us!
