This blog contains comments and teaching regarding living the Christian faith and comments on the intersection of faith and many other aspects of life from pop culture to science. It also has some stories--hopefully they are amusing stories--from my life. ~Dan

I'm Sorry For Apologizing Too Much
Someone told me I need to stop apologizing all the
time. He said, “It’s embarrassing and unseemly that you apologize about
everything. You need to stop it.”
I’ve given a good bit of thought to this matter and
my friend is right. His words were a valid and helpful form of correction.
So, I just I want to formally announce that I am
sorry for apologizing too much.

Correction Is An Opportunity For Growth
To receive correction—when we need it—is good and
helpful. The problem with correction is
that it stings (especially if it’s not delivered in a loving, gentle and
respectful way). There are truths, for
all of us, that are difficult to receive.
But if we are willing to graciously hear correction and humbly consider
the truth of it, we have a great opportunity for growth.

Be Glad For Discipline
“Only a fool despises a parent’s discipline; whoever learns
from correction is wise.” Proverbs 15:5.
Wise discipline is a lot like physical pain. It doesn’t feel good but it has great value
in bringing important truth to our attention.
Be glad that you can feel pain, it’s the body’s warning system. Be glad for discipline, too. It leads to growth and maturity.

We're Disciplined By Those Who Really Love Us
If someone attempts to bring discipline or correction to your life—especially if he/she does it humbly and graciously—don’t be offended or hurt, this is a very clear indication that the person really cares about you.

Real Love Might Involve Gentle Correction
Extending love and grace to others does not necessarily mean we approve of everything that other people do. In fact, TRUE love might mean that we would help a person recognize error in his/her thinking, attitudes, or behavior. It requires honesty and significant maturity to understand that real love might actually involve gentle correction.

E-Flash From Dan, CORRECTION To Message Sent Earlier Today, 10/14/10
Dear E-Flash Friends;
It has been brought to my attention…by several eagle-eyed readers, that I made an error in my E-Flash message sent earlier today, 10/14/10. (The good thing is this proved to me that people actually read these messages.) I wrote that the Oktoberfest and the Trunk Or Treat events are happening on back-to-back weekends. That is incorrect.
This is what happens when you read a calendar with the lights off, following a dosage of Nyquil. So, I apologize for the incorrect information.
Actually, there is a weekend in between the Oktoberfest and the Trunk or Treat event. Oktoberfest is Sunday, October 17th, and Trunk or Treat is Friday, October 29th. I was wrong about the “back-to-back weekends” part of the earlier E-Flash, but all the other stuff about the events—the fact that they’re fun and worthwhile and exciting—still holds. And you are still cordially invited to the new series on the New Testament book of Colossians which begins this Sunday, October 17th.
Again, I’m sorry for the confusion. Please know that I have been properly chastised for my mistake by the “proper chastisers”. And, frankly, this is just another indication that I need a little more sleep. So, I’m taking away my television privileges, as punishment for my error, and I’m sending myself to bed without dessert.
Your humbled pastor,
Dan
