Manners and civility are important to the proper functioning
of a free society because it is the nature of some free people to push the
boundaries—in fact, to push way past the boundaries. Manners and civility are an aspect of the
individual restraints that keep freedom from becoming ugly, unhealthy and,
ultimately, destructive. Keep in mind
that sometimes freedom destroys itself.
“Manners are of more importance than laws.” – Edmund Burke.
